About Dr. Robin Boushey

Dr. Boushey was born in Ottawa and received his undergraduate, medical degree, and general surgery residency training at the University of Toronto. During his residency, he also completed a PhD focusing on the biologic actions of glucagon-like peptide-2 at the Institute of Medical Science and the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto.

After his residency, he completed a Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at The Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery at St. Michael's Hospital, University of Toronto. This was followed by additional training in colon and rectal surgery at the Lahey Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts in 2004. In 2005, he joined the University of Ottawa where he also serves as the Research Director for the Division of General Surgery at the University of Ottawa. He is an investigator with the Ottawa Health Research Institute (OHRI) and heads up a research team whose major interests are in outcomes and health services related researches.

Dr. Boushey’s main interests focus on all types of colorectal diseases such as colon and rectal cancer, hemorrhoids, fissures, pilonidal abscesses, fistula-in-ano and anal cancer.  He performs diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopies and sees many patients for endoscopic removal of large colonic polyps and tumours. Patients are offered state of the art surgical techniques including Minimally Invasive (“keyhole”) Surgery(MIS), Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEMS), and combined laparoscopic and endoscopic resection. Several of the procedures can be performed with incision < 5 cm or in some cases with no abdominal incisions.

Dr. Boushey has numerous peer-reviewed publications and is actively involved in continuing minimally invasive surgery training, education and research. He is the Principal Investigator for several peer-reviewed grants. He sits on numerous national and international committees including the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) as well as the Canadian Association of General Surgeons. He has authored several invited book chapters and has co-edited 2 textbooks. He also sits on the Standards and Best Practices Committee of the ASCRS and is involved in the development of various practice parameters that influence how colorectal surgery is practiced across North America and Europe.

In addition, he is one of four invited international panelists to present and participate in the  "Improving Rectal Cancer Quality of Care  Symposium" held at The American Society of Colorectal Surgery Tripartite World Scientific Meeting, Seattle, WA June 2017.

Dr. Boushey is a Medical Director at Ottawa Gastrointestinal Institute - a new innovative way of providing highest quality of care and quick access to patients with gastrointestinal disease.

He is also a Medical Director at Colorectal Cancer Assessment Centre, The Ottawa Hospital.


This is an innovative and patient centred tool developed by Dr. Boushey’s research team at The Ottawa Hospital to improve patients’ knowledge and participation in the decision process related to rectal cancer.


Dr. Boushey will present at the upcoming American Society Of Colon and Rectal Surgery (ASCRS) meeting in Hollywood Florida - video session demonstrating how to repair parastomal hernia.

Dr. Boushey’s team will demonstrate a patient decision aid tool in the exhibition area during the conference.  This is a new innovative, patient centered tool developed by Dr. Boushey’s team at The Ottawa Hospital to improve patients’ knowledge and participation in the decision process related to rectal cancer.The goal is to make this tool available to all surgeons and patients around the world undergoing rectal cancer surgery.  The tool is currently being tested at The Ottawa Hospital as part of an ongoing clinical study.

Dr. Boushey was invited as a speaker at the Canadian Surgery Forum post graduate course in Vancouver, Canada.  The presentation is on "Tips for improving colonoscopic polypectomy".


Dr. Boushey will speak at the CAGS Debates in Minimally Invasive Surgery: Controversies in colon and hernia surgery: i) Laparoscopic colectomy should be the standard of care in Canada (pro/con); ii) Biologic mesh should be used routinely in complex hernias and contaminated fields (pro/con), scheduled on Friday, September 20, 2013 from 13:30-14:50, Room 208, Level 2.

Dr. Boushey will also speak at the New concepts in common anorectal disorders: Anal Fissure and stenosis – Medical versus surgical treatment, scheduled on Saturday, September21, 2013 from 13:30-16:00, Room 214, Level 2.

On June 21st, 2012, the Ontario Medical Association and Patient’s Association of Canada (PAC) hosted a ceremony to recognize two of Ottawa's finest physicians. The 2012 Canadian Surgery Forum will convene Sept. 13-16, in Calgary. Dr.Boushey is invited speaker at Canadian Society of Colorectal Surgery Postgraduate Course and will be chairing a session entitled "Laparoscopic nuts and bolts course: colorectal surgery". He will discuss laparoscopic surgery tips and tricks with Professors and Surgeons from across Canada over breakfast. For more information, please click here.


The 2011 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons, one of the largest international meetings of surgeons in the world, will convene October 23-27, 2011, in San Francisco, CA. The Clinical Congress program will include guest lectures by prominent leaders in surgery.  Dr. Boushey will be teaching the Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery course.


Dr.Boushey was invited to attend plenary talk on Communities of Practice Model, the 2nd Round Table Conference hosted by the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada on May 27, 2011.  "Colorectal Cancer Management – 5 Years and Beyond", focused on bringing together a wide spectrum of cancer stakeholders to provide input on setting the future agenda in the areas of prevention, detection and treatment of colorectal cancer. This helps to build the platform for future cancer strategies 5 years and beyond.


Dr.Boushey has been selected as co-chair of the Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery course hosted by American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) to be held in Vancouver, BC in May 2011.


Dr.Boushey attended a Colorectal Cancer Champion Meeting hosted by Cancer Care Ontario held in Toronto, ON in April 2011.

Dr. Boushey was invited to the 6th Annual General Surgery Conference at the College of Medicine, King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; held during March 5 to 7, 2011.  Among the speakers were a group of experts and pioneers in the branches of General Surgery who discussed important topics.


Dr. Boushey is a keynote speaker invited to the General Surgery Symposium in Halifax, NS in December 2010.


In May 2010, the Ottawa Hospital was recognized by the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) with The Midwest Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, William C. Berstein, MD Award.


On Feb. 2010, Dr. Boushey was one of the selected speakers at the 5th Annual General Surgery Conference from around the world who participated at the conference. They addressed various advances and controversies in surgical practice.
